Food production

This theme takes off from the data we gained in the initial Aurland resource survey, and the subsequent action pathway developed in the back-casting process.

We now have a fair overview of what our target group needs, next is to see if we can supply it, also in regards to the other two parameters of the triple bottom line; profit and planet. How do we enable local production to cover a larger percentage of the local need?

By utilizing the overview of the local resources, we're able to identify which producers are best suited at growing certain crops, at producing various final products, which means we are able to focus on the short-comings of the system.

We'll learn about perennial agriculture systems at classes and workshops which are open for all growers in the valley, and we see if steps could be taken to optimize the food production at SJH.

Together with the faculty of SJH we will reevaluate the future growing and production plans, and we'll seek to provide the 'Worklife-contact' with contacts to local producers, the amount of produce necessary for local consumption, suggestions for further cooperation with SJH (potentially through internships), support with machinery or promotion/sale.

The process of this exercise will be beneficial for the students in developing co-operative partnerships as entrepreneurs, as well as establishing niche-productions. Significantly the students will learn about agriculture production methods which produce more topsoil than they consume/disturb.
